Description |
Wooden cutlery canteen with two drawers. Drawers and top rail are carved in Maori motifs and inlaid with paua shell. The drawer-pulls are incorporated into the carved motifs. The top of the chest has an incised kowhaiwhai pattern, and may have originally been picked out with a pigment. Wood is dark stained. Drawers are lined with green baize material, and have four compartments and a central handle. Carved in Menzies' 1890s style but there are no clues to date this more specifically. |

Provenance |
Carved by John Henry Menzies (1840-1919) for his son Stephen Menzies (1875-1959). Stephen Menzies farmed Glen Weim, Little Akaloa, then Rehutai. He later moved away and farmed in the North Island, at Mokutuku near Dannevirk and then Te Kuha near Hastings. The canteen was inherited by his daughter Leonora Menzies (the donor), and her name is inscribed on the inside back panel in black ink. Added in blue pen is the inscription "Carved by John Henry Menzies for Stephen Menzies / Leonora Menzies". |
