Large family bible, illustrated King James version, with a dictionary and other front matter. Cover ornate with deeply embossed leather, 8 raised gilt panels, all pages edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with black and white engravings and colour lithographs. A central section has a space for inscribing family names. Samuel and Mary Curry, the original owners of the bible, have their names written there along with the date and place of their marriage. (The couple had no children so there are no more names recorded.) A photograph album section at the back for presenting carte de visite - six portraits present, including two tin types (4 albumen) - see notes. The bible of Samuel and Mary Curry (nee Mullen) of Robinsons Bay. The couple were childless. It appears that the bible came into the possession of Samuel's brother John Curry, passed to his daughter Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Weir, then to her son Billy Weir father of Clive Weir, who gave it to John Curry (donor) in April 2024. Lizzie Weir, like her uncle Samuel and his wife Mary, was an member of the Plymouth Bretheren Christians. |
