Description |
Hand written letter by Frank Worsley to Jock [i.e. James Mann Wordie (1889-1962)], written from 6 Gladstanes Road, London W.14, dated 09/02/1940. The letter mentions his failure with a posting in the Navy, and a new job Worsley has obtained from the War Office. He then asks for up to date information about Arctic equipment. There are pencil annotations, presumably made by Jock, above a list of equipment queried. For context of letter see John Thomson, Shackleton's Captain, (1st edn) pp. 174-5. transcript: Dear Jock, Failing to get afloat in the Navy at 67, I recently offered my servces to the W. O. for snow and ice conditions. Today I met my former military boss (the C.I.G.S.) and he asked me to call at the War Office on Monday, to see about a job. I have also been arranging, with Burberrys for about 8000 white trousers for Finns. As you are as up to date & experienced in Arctic equipment as anyone, can you give me a list of addresses for e.g. Beauvais, Hoosh, Streimers, skis (Hagen etc), sledges, ski-boots, moccasins, finnestcoe [illeg.], low temperature lubrication. If you can spare the time to let me have a few up to date notes I would be grateful. Yours aye Skipper F. A. Worsley |
